The Pierce Lab welcomes new PhD student Phil Lai and 3rd year PhD student Zach Morris! Phil comes to us after finishing a Masters degree at Brown University on bat flight mechanics; he will be working with Stephanie and co-supervised by Andy Biewener. Zach has transferred from the Abzhanov lab (which has relocated to Imperial College, London); he is working on crocodylomorph skull development and evolution in collaboration with both the Pierce and Abzhanov labs.

Could Alien Life Spread 'Like a Virus' to the Stars?

Could Alien Life Spread 'Like a Virus' to the Stars?

August 31, 2015
"As astronomical techniques become more advanced, a team of astrophysicists think they will be able to not only detect the signatures of alien life in exoplanetary atmospheres, but also track its relentless spread throughout the galaxy.

The research, headed by Henry Lin of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), assumes that this feat may be possible in a generation or so and that the hypothesis of panspermia may act as the delivery system for alien biology to hop from one star system to another."

Esther's paper published in Science!

August 28, 2015

Congratulations, Esther!!

Abstract: Amorphous nanoparticles (a-NPs) have physicochemical properties distinctly different from those of the corresponding bulk crystals; for example, their solubility is much higher. However, many materials have a high propensity to crystallize and are difficult to formulate in an amorphous structure without stabilizers. We fabricated a microfluidic nebulator that can produce amorphous NPs from a wide range of materials, even including pure table salt (NaCl). By using supersonic air flow, the nebulator produces drops that are so...
